How to get my controller recognised on PC?

When I start JA3, the game only recognises my mouse and keyboard, not my controller.  I find that many other games have an auto-detect feature so if I start using my Xbox controller on my PC the game detects it.  However, this has not been the case with JA3 for me.  Some other games have somewhere the equivalent of a tick box for choosing controller or keyboard, but I don't see this tick box either with JA3.

I'd like to play JA3 on PC with my controller (a personal preference).

How do I get JA3 to recognise my controller after I start up the game on Steam?

Update: solved this problem myself this time by unplugging my controller and then plugging it in again.
