I think color technical all mercs should look the same but right now it looks like the artist changed in the development process.

Blood and Gus as an example look the same artistically but Scully, Magic and Vicky are more cartoony and feel out of place.

I dont think, that is about the artstyle. Magic was one of the most serious guys in the game and they made a silly looking guy with a hat from the 1920s out of him.

In the game he will run around with that hat, so it is not done with some portrait chance.

Same with Ice and others. The developers just try to be funny. Bad, thats not my style of humour.

I think the differences between the merc clothes should be more subtile an appropiate to the theme. Nobody needs a suit in the jungle.

@LunokhodI have to agree with Ice, he looks even way younger like a teenager in JA3.

Most of the more attraktive females from JA2 are more ugly, some other characters, like ICE, are looking like a Model.

Meltdown for example is prettier than in JA2.

Overall, every merc has a medicore look. A Bad desicion, it would be much better, if there would be a diversity of good looking, normal looking and Bad looking mercs.

But attraktive females are not allowed anymore ;)

@scope112: I agree with you 100%. All these points need to be fixed by the devs. The combination of the very colorful cartoony art with the lifeless portraits/conversations really kill the JA atmosphere for me. I hope this can be improved also color technical so that the game and the characters will get a more serious tone.

I dont think, that the colours will do it really, because running around with mercs in this outfits will still be out of place.

I like the fact, that they are looking different, but also a guy like Ice looks strange.

Have to quote myself because I can't edit the post anymore.

But, yeah. The movement animations are kinda placeholdery looking when the characters do that weird sprint run. There are good looking movement mixed in there as well, little dives, crouch moving while covering from side to side weapon at the ready etc. But with that one, I can almost hear the cartoon tippy-tappy-tippy-tappy sound from Tom and Jerry when they run.

I also wish the mercs would be more dynamic while taking cover behind things. I mean instead of just standing in place they could position themselves better to fit the cover they're in for example. Give little peeks around the corner and so on. That's one thing I think the devs should steal from the modern X-COM games.

I really do not understand, how this could happen. It should not be that hard to get some normal looking running animations.

It may be cost saving to spend less time on those things, but it is so hard to overlook, that i always would be annoyed playing the game. It even would help a little to just slow the running a bit down.

For other parts, like the poor character design in many cases, i just hope, that modding is possible, not only for the portraits.

  5. Just looking the beta gameplay on switch.

Aiming System looks good, but the aiming symbol should Mode to the head, when aiming at it.

Map range is looking ok, so far.

The new Mercs on the A.I.M site, are really a disappointment on the first look. Like Anon already said, the screenwide conversation window is not good. Good is that the mercs make some comments, in conversation.

  6. I think the world design looks great. Also the rpg part sounds good. I think

What can we expect with "Travel on the satellite map"? From my understanding there is no helicopter or car, so does this work like in JA2, where you need a couple of hours to moove between the maps and can also run into ambushes, etc?

  7. My biggest concerns right now are the character design and level size and animations.

The general tone is too goofy, especially look of the enemie is bad.

Maybe the developers are afraid to make it too serious out of political correctness. But i do not get it, why take Africa as a narrative and then be afraid to design the soldiers appropiate to the theme.

Another thing is the characters design of the mercs. I think its a good decision, that they look different from each other, but some of them are just lame or overly comical. The females (Fox for example) are also too unatracctive designed for my taste. In todays gaming world this is the new standard, but for a game like JA3 i would expect a little more 90s approach.

So modding support would be great.

For the level design, its important, that there are some bigger distances. Always standing 6 meters from the enemy looks stupid and gives an unrealistic feel for weapon ranges, especially for snipinging. I also hope, that the enemies are seeking cover etc and nut just stand in the open field in firefights.

The animations are not looking good so far, i hope they try some improvements.

What i like so far is the fact, that the developers defenetly are going into some rpg details, and try to get the different aspects of JA2 together, worldmap, tactical gameplay, rpg, story. I just hope they try to get the different aspects really right. The JA brand has so much potential, but you have to get it right.

  8. I did not find "hate comment" on steam. I did find a very critical comment, where a guy is critical about the design of "Grunty" and other things.

But i think with the history of Jagged Alliance, ist normal to have doubts.

But for the more cosmetic things, there is always the solution of modding support. So if some players are unhappy with there favorite mercs from JA, they should be able to change some parts, in the end this are 2D pictures, i dont see the problem.

I am also afraid, that the developers try to be too funny, because they seem to focus on quirky mercs. The other thing are the outfits. So you have a group of strange looking mercs running through the field. Like others told before, it is nice to have one or two quirky characters on the team, but you can exaggerate it fast.

I dont know, how the devs are doing this, but with some games, not speaking for JA3, it feels, like devs lived in a bubble. I think its good to take a look outside of the bubble. It is true that devs shouldnt be discouraged, but strong critical feedback can also be a hint to question yourself.

Most of the people here are JA veterans and no childs.

The one thing I am most sceptical about is the unique Talent point.

I think that is a great idea, because of the interest to play with different mercs, because everyone is unique.

Does the I.M.P. character also has a talent point?

I think the perk system is more problematic:

    1. Is reskilling possible? Has a merc with level 7 already bad percs, so you dont want to play him? Do you want to wait with the perks until Fidel reaches 80 health because, you can add a silver perk?

    2. With rpg style specialisation there is always a wish to choose the perfect skillset, like every melee character needs hit and run and frog leaping.

When particular mercs are significant better in certain playstyles, the more the fun in choosing mercs for there personality is unattractive.

In Xcom2 i always had certain builds. There will be the common guides, which builds are the best and so on.

I don't think it's a big deal or a priority, most mercs look excellent like steroid reaper hitman. Ivan looks fine in the latest progress videos, so maybe they changed him from the trailer.

    Reaper is in the game?

I didnt spotted him so far.

Now I do hate the last two characters, some rando kid looking chick with hipster glasses, no thanks, called "bombastic", massive cringe, and I think the guy wearing the cap and blinged out chain is cringe, but there's nothing wrong with first two characters.

I think the new characters are disapointing, a little off, like in Mass Effect Andromeda or X-COM Chimera Squad.

They should have sticked to the 80s vibes or some more international diversity. Hong Kong Style Chow Yun-Fat would have been a great addition.

Oh man... so many to choose from but my absolute favorite Merc is Reaper. He's expensive but well worth the money and if you use him in 1.13 then you get a heavy hitter with a high power designated marksmen role. You can't really use him until late mid to endgame but it's such a pleasure to pair him up with Shadow or Scope for a hard core spotting team.

In Ja2 started with Reaper, Blood, Fox and Trevor. The tactic was to sign Reaper with daily contracts in the start and running fast to San Mona, after Drassen.

So far there was nothing to see from Fox, kind of strange, given the point, that she is for sure one of the most recognisable characters in the game.

Fox seems to be in the game. She is mentioned several times in devdiary 3.

  14. I liked Scully, Fox, Ice, Blood, Magic, Start was always with Blood and Fox, i liked the Martial Arts from Blood and the dual wield from Fox. I hope, that the martial arts animations are good and the dual wield still possible.
