Aside from the subscription part I agree. Xcom 2 did it right in this department where you could be completely uniform or a rag tag group of weirdos. The devs already said that merc customization would be a very difficult task for them so I don't see this happening even later. This means they didn't think to add the capability when developing (modifying) their engine which is what make it difficult to add after the fact.

What's so incredibly ironic here is that there are quite a few who wanted uniform soldiers AND gear customization. So the miss on customization is felt by those people that as well. It still might be possible to eventually replace the in game models but that requires decent art skills. Even doing that, you'd shave to pick a look you want and keep it without it being adjustable in game.

You could possibly make a mod which does it like:

Your merc has standardoutfit: Merc uses Hitman Model
Your merc uses combat outfit: Merc uses MD Model
Your merc dresses as Rambo: Merc uses Blood Model
Your merc uses camo gear: Merc uses Shadow Model

Hair/Skin color shouldnt be a problem to change with mods either.
Sure, then in the end everyone would run around with the Shadow model. But that would be the case regardless with visible outfits.

  2. Gamer mouse and graphics cards...and motherboards. Because...you know your 4070 isnt as fast if there isnt the word "gamer" on it. πŸ˜‰

These special names for CEs are very common. Tactical means nothing, they could have named it "Grand Chien" edition or something else completely arbitrary.
Wolfenstein had a Panzerhund Edition for example. πŸ˜‰

  3. Overwatch is not unlimited.

It's working like in many other games (and NOT XCom), where you basically turn your AP into shots, which is very close to interrupts (just that you cannot move and decide the order, you could even argue its more realistic).

When you start overwatch you have to have a minimum amount of points, which seems to be equal the amount you need to shoot normally.

    I found 3 examples:
Merc with 4 AP starts Overwatch with 4 Minimum: He has 2 overwatch charges.
Merc with 5 AP starts Overwatch with 4 Minimum: He has 2 overwatch charges.
Merc with 8 AP starts Overwatch with 4 Minimum: He has 3 overwatch charges.

Once these "charges" are gone, the cone disappears from being displayed.

    I have two questions. πŸ™‚

    - When exactly is Thursday's Twitch stream, what hour?

    - What game engine is used for Jagged Alliance 3? (custom, Unreal, ...)

Hey Redglyph! Nice to see more RPGwatch people here! πŸ˜„
The Streams are atΒ 11 AM EST / 17:00 CEST
The engine is an inhouse one (that had been answered in one of the last streams)

  5. While T-Shirts are easy to produce (such as everything in the box) they have the disadvantage of different sizes.

Personally I am not a fan of stickers and postcards as you wont be able to do anything with them.

Figures on the other hand are extremely specific and not that cheap to produce.

Imho the CE isn't the best in the world. There is no particular item I find especially awesome, but I think the price is right, and it does fit well into a display in the shelves. The box seems to have about the right size to fit next to bigger Big Boxes.
Only issue I see there is that it does not have any branding on the side...so if you have it stashed to big boxes its just a piece of blastic. That also had been an issue with the Torment: Numenera Big Box, which on the sides was just 100% black, making it an anonymous black box, which is quite a shame (and especially with a cardboard box a massive design flaw).

What I would have liked most is actually a high quality cloth map. Thats relatively easy to produce, it's practical, and you can also use it as great showcase. Like with this Map of Drakensang River of Time.

    http://ndnw.net/no-hp-stuff/drakensang-map.jpg
Ofc there are also horrible examples. Like the super cheap dragon age origins map.

That said, I think the box will fit well into my collection.

  6. You can argue the other way around and say that CTH is casualizing it, as you don't need to think about the environment that much, you get the potential result handed on a silver platter. Maybe similar as driving a racing game and having the "optimal line" displayed about where you need to drive in order to take the turn perfectly.

I just started playing JA1 again and now I got to agree even more to not show CTH. In my firefights with .38 guns I almost need 1 "magazine" on each character to just kill one enemy. It would just feel totally odd, and unsatisfying if the game showed me with each shot "25%" which - in other games - usually means "don't dare to take the shot". But in these battles I am fighting, it's the best option I get.

developers are from czech republic or bulgaria right. they should add a bulgarian merc. maybe hahahaha

"overworked programmer" haha. red bloodshot tired eyes glasses skinny frame drinks coffee and cigarettes has jittery mannerisms. a bit like madlab but more neurotic and tired.

can definitely be a character if not a merc.

I dont think we know all the new Mercs yet, and I am also not sure about the total number. Initially they mentioned 40 mercs and 30 of them original, but I think there are more than 30 original ones. So not sure if it is "just" 10 new ones.

So far we have seen a Ukranian (Kalyna), a Peshmerga/Iraq (Fauda), Livewire (i think she was israeli) Omyrn and Smiley (no idea about nationality). So who knows who is left πŸ™‚

woah the forum is very active let me take a look around

Better not in this thread πŸ˜„

I disagree about your opinion with not showing CTH but that's fine ^^

That whole discussion reminds me of Back in Action. Just the other way around.
Back then the developers just jumped on the bandwagon:
At the time everything had to beΒ 3D and everything had to be realtime with pause (actually it might be thanks to XComs Success that this is no longer the case)

In an interview they even said that they made it realtime because its 3D.

In the end Jagged Alliance BiA was a mediocre game, which lots of JA Fans didn't like.

  9. Pretty cool CE, and quite a nice price.

When I read the first lines I already thought like "do they also pull a Baldurs Gate 3 now and want 500 bucks for it?"

But the price for 130€ is very reasonable imho. Also...it does include the game - which is also something not very common anymore. ^^

Would have wished for a cloth map though.

  10. So for those who didnt follow the stream, they have been talking about this topic again over here:

    https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1811204423

    at Minute 30:42 onwards

    To give a brief summary:

They had chance to hit in first. Ian (original JA designer) immediately thought it was off (31:55)
The didnt have CTH in the original games due to a councious choice. Not a technical limitation.

And then they continued with what they talked about a couple of times before:

General feeling was, everyone was hunting for exactly the right spots and the right numbers, didnt feel like real firefights.
When they removed the CTH the immediate feedback was that it felt much better.

    @agris Please stop talking

I am not sure why You, Woody but also anon think like you are the only people around who are allowed to write stuff and have an opinion...
Also no need to spam that opinion yourselves.

I just read the Rock, Paper, Shotgun article about JA3 where the author criticizes all the vague informations shown in the current combat system. They say that the informations are very confusing and do not tell you exactly what they mean in the overall context.

But their argument was basically: XCom and Into the Breach (lol) set the standard, and everyone else got to follow it.

  13. 52 minutes ago, KyleSimmons said:

Not really, CTH was in lots of RPGs going back to Icewind Dale.

    Basically every RPG had CTH

I'm sorry but none of the reasons you described pan out

    Silent Storm had CTH

modern jagged alliance sequels like Rage had CTH

All old and new RPGs have CTH

    XCOM has CTH

I think our definition of "modern" is a bit different πŸ˜„
