I tried last week. Turns out 1.13 runs terribly on windows 10 (and 8 I think). Tried some fixes and gave up. I was so nostalgic I decided to give JA Rage on PS4 a go... it's bearable... barely...

I have to disagree. 1.13 is a textbook on game design. It's all there for them to learn from. I can't imagine anyone would dare work on a "true successor" while ignoring 1.13. Maybe it is wishful thinking, but if you wanted to have a go at something a lot of people failed in, you'd probably focus some research on what actually worked and was successful. Or... hire them! People do that now. CDPR hired modders they were impressed with. I know full control tried to collaborate with Bear's Pit, but I guess that was more of a pose for Kickstarter backers.

Nice JA history overview. I've always felt like all official games after JA2 are best ignored as they only harm the franchise. The 1.13 mod however was the best mod for any game I have ever experienced, improving upon most of the game mechanics and features. The striking realistic weapon and weapon customization variety is what launched this game to my personal top 5 games. Xcom is great, but its formula would be a terrible oversimplification. I wouldn't want to play a JA which has just bullets (with no specific caliber, type, etc). JA2 1.13 with modern graphics is everything JA3 should aim for. The other titles are just irrelevant.
