  1. Buns surely is a real (and somewhat underpriced, like Barry) asset. Besides, I like her sarcastic tone. Hopefully she has kept it. She was deconected when I started my run  so I hadn't been tempted to hire her.

I am pleasantly surprised by Livewire. A real asset, good mechanic, top intel gatherer (very high wisdom), top hacker, decent medic. She may look rather useless in combat, well, give her a Gewehr 98, not that bad😇. Her supposed Pakistani accent is nice too.

  2. @sandman25dcsss Haemimont has put a mod showing CtH on Steam Workshop. I won't use it, but of course anyone is free to use it.

They put the following disclaimer though :

Displays chance to hit on different body parts and the health bar of units.

Jagged Alliance 3 is a game meant to represent firefights in their entire chaotic and messy glory. Visible chance to hit is not the kind of core experience we had in mind while building and balancing the game.

For those that really want to try it - we've made it available in this mod.

    Disclaimers
    - The game is balanced around no visible CTH. You may experience dramatic difference in balance when using this mode.
    - Having visible CTH will affect the pace at which you play each combat turn as analysis tends to focus on the numbers rather than the tactical situation on the map.
    - The game tends to feel a lot more like a puzzle rather than a real firefight.
    - The AI has been thought to consider players having less information and will not adapt to the change in visible CTH.

Welcome to age of spoiled people 😉 In the past you had to edit raw files, no problem, now you have editor, huge issues.

huh, yes to tweaks some weapons or mercs stats, notepad++ might do the the trick; perhaps to replace portrait any image editor can do the trick. Maybe it's still possible in JA3

But how do you think you can design a conversation or a map using raw files?

I just hope they didn't give that overdone treatment to all the mercs. The humour in JA2 is very subtle, not really meant to make you laugh, but many situations will provide you with that chuckle.

    Agreed.

JA2 lines were written by Shaun Lyng, who is a master writer. Therefore I do not expect to get the exact same tone in JA3. That doesn't mean the writing will be bad, just different with moments that make you laugh, likely less subtle though.

Having the mercs intervene in conversation is a nice touch, even if it is to say nothing or something irrelevant or if they always come back to the same topic like Igor-Vodka, it makes them more involved and more lively. Some mercs will irrate you. If they do it means they are well done. You feel their presence.

Regarding the mercs in a JA game, in my opinion nothing would be worse then having just a set of bland characters you just pick according to their stats. Boring, boring, boring.

With a slot system, it means everything is roughly the same size. Some items can be stacked in quantity, such as magazines, but there are still limitations. Should an FN FAL take up the same size as a M1911? Some magazines are smaller or more narrow than others.

Devdiary 11 Guns Guns, one of the first pictures, Len's backpack. AR takes two slots, pistol one slot.

I liked Silent Storm's inventory too. It was a kind of mini game indeed. You had to well organize your items in order to pack maximum stuff. Obviously it was totally unrealistic you could happily pack 4 machines gun, ammo, grenades, a couple of pistols and SMGs, tools, but who cares?

  6. Chill, I've seen a big battle on a large map (Koinsky videos in French), the first city on the main continent near a diamond mine, if I remember correctly.

They were surely more than 4 enemies, the battle was concentrated on a part of the map, meaning they did come, they even tried by two different ways.

I really liked Ja2 Movement-possibilities. You could do tactic sidesteps and siderolls, which was a very useful and cool function standing next to windows or doors.

I might be wrong but I think I've seen in one the video Ivan shooting from behind cover sidestepping on his own. So it seems that the game takes care of.

I also saw Igor being crouched behing cover, siderolled another good position and crouched again. The streamer didn't have to key in (S)tand, (R)un), (C)rouch ...

Good for players's Quality of Life, perhaps not for micromanagement's aficionados.

I try not to watch too many videos (the long ones), not to spoil things. I just didn't look like that in any video I've seen (3-4x 30-45 minute videos). They seemed to click a spot, and the grenades jsut landed exactly where they clicked.

It even happened to Barry (video in French made by Koinsky)

    Jagged Alliance 2 wasn't a military simulator.

Absolutely. It is a tactical RPG.

That's why I do not get the people that want it to be a military simulator, ask for more realism but accept that a merc carries an insane number of weapons during combat, need a walking animation because a merc cannot run for a long time carrying such heavy load, but accept that he carries such a heavy load for a very long time, ask for a weight limitation but load a merc twice his maximum weight in order to improve his strength (you call that role playing?) and so on ...

I've no problem with the amount of stuff a merc can carry day after a day , it's a RPG, it's a game, you are free to pack 5 toolkits. I've even suggested simple rules above to make it more 'realistic' regarding the inventory.

What baffles me is the incredible amount of criticisms this game receive, despite it is likely the best attempt so far to revive the franchise. Tough Love, ok, but Tabarnak it's sometimes a bit too much.

By the way grenades can mishap and not fall where expected.

  10. Sorry to say it, but XCOM did it right. Wages of War a long while ago did it right too.

    You want realism?

Except for being caught flat-footed and just the time needed to react, nobody would go into active combat carrying 2 AR and a RPG over the shoulders while having a LMG in hands, whatever their strength could be. Trained elite forces can carry a very heavy load, but during the approach.

    Why did XCOM right?

    • You are limited to a main weapon and a secondary weapon plus a limited number of grenades/medikits/tools you have to choose for the incoming mission.
    • XCOM does not have unlimited ammo, it assumes your soldiers are not stupid enough to not bring enough ammo for a skirmish. The grenade launcher has limited ammo.
    • XCOM also assumes that if a soldier chooses the Grenadier path, s/he’s strong enough to carry heavy weapons. If a soldier chooses the Commando path, XCOM assumes s/he’s dexterous and strong enough to deliver lethal blows using a blade …

You want to translate into JA3 while retaining JA no class/freedom of use :

    • Penalty of accuracy for a weak merc firing a heavy weapon crouching or standing. No penalty proned of course. Bonus for a strong merc.
    • Accuracy/Damage inflicted penalty when dealing a blade blow with a low dexterity. Bonus for a dexterous merc.
    • Damage inflicted penalty when a weak merc punches. Bonus for a strong merc.

    And so one …
I guess that this kind of rule has somehow been implemented already.

You want to cope with the inventory while retaining the JA like inventory:

    • Shared inventory must not be accessible during combat. Period. If it is, well convince yourself your mercs are clever enough to bring enough ammo from the shared inventory before the fight starts. Even if some level of micro management can be fun, I’m not sure that having to split boxes of ammo between mercs is that fun in the long run. Therefore I can live with an always accessible inventory, yet it bristles my hair.
    • Fumbling into your backpack to change weapons or do anything else cost all APs, at least half APs
    • Swapping weapons : main to sidearm, main to blade ... should cost 1 or 2 (better) AP, time to put your AR over your shoulder and put a knife in hand.

Sorry for the wall of text.

So where will the game get it's "serious" tone from? I just thought a more serious or drab tone could have helped contrast the very light-hearted comical characters and the overall much lighter tone JA3 seems to have.

Every character you meet seems to have to be flashy and over-the-top, your mercs have instagram profile photos. I'm just finding it a little too whimsical for my own taste.

I get your point. Where will the game get its serious tone from? I honestly can't answer before I play the game. It can come from the writing, what NPCs say, how they interact. It can come from expressive scenery. The one below is not too bad, poor lightly damaged village.

I know that many are fans of an isometric view, however I hope that the camera can be freely set at ground level especially in a safe area, much better for immersion in my opinion.

If we could not post photos of mangled bodies and real life gore in a video game forum that would be great, thx

Sure, sorry. Unfortunately I don't know how to remove it. Maybe a moderator.

Jagged Alliance 2 had very mute colours. The landscape was bland. The contrast and lightheartedness came from the humour in the mercs, the humour in the situations, like coming across Brenda. Elliot. Flowers. The funny one-liners your mercs could come up with every now and then. THAT was the contrast for the mute and bland landscape. Colours that, without those tidbits of humour, would eventually make you feel on the down instead.

What happens when you break that fragile balance, is that you've got a game that is vibrant, lacking any serious tone and 'feeling' to the "landscape", on top of that you'll get plenty of one-liners and humour. Where is the contrast? THAT contrast is EXTREMELY important when telling a story.

I almost feel like I'm explaining this to someone who hasn't played many video games or watched many movies before.

I have played many video games (from 1980) and watched many movies, thanks.

Look, we all love JA2 here. However we may have different perceptions. I appreciate that they try to reproduce african colors and landscapes. I don't need to have mute colors to get the contrast between very serious, dramatic topics and tidbits of humor. Actually the constrat between a beautifully colored landscape and death and destruction is even more striking in my opition but your opinion is as valid as mine.

It’s a green hollow, where a river is singing
Crazily hanging on the grasses rags
Of silver; where the sun, from the proud mountain,
Is shinning: it’s a little valley bubbling with sunlight.

A young soldier, his mouth open, his head bare,
And the nape of his neck bathing in cool blue watercress,
Is sleeping; he is stretched out on the grass, under the skies,
Pale in his green bed where the light falls like rain.

Feet in the gladiolas, he is sleeping. Smiling like
A sick child would smile, he takes a nap:
Nature, rock him warmly: he is cold.

    Fragrances do not make his nostrils quiver;
He sleeps in the sun, hand on the breast,
Peacefully. He has two red holes in his right side.

  13. Maybe they will listen to you and provide a demo. I didn't remember having said I was against a demo. Just said enough info is available to decide whether to purchase or wait a couple of months.

Sure performances depend on the PC actual configuration, drivers, disk space, background tasks, antivirus, ... However if it can run a more resources demanding game, chances are it can run a less demanding one.

  14. Unfortunately vibrant colors do not prevent a war, google getty images african wars, select news pictures (not sure of the exact translation in English) and see for yourself. Please don't tell me that all photographers have used special filters.

You can speak about very serious matters and remind the player every now and then 'hey I am a game' : mercs quotes, 'Elliot, you idiot', flowers, Father Walker, Hillbillies ... , JA2 excelled at. JA2 wasn't grim, bleak and depressing at all.

  15. I just said THQ and Haemimont made another choice. That's all. Yes I reported that the streamers I watched, didn't complain about performances, that's a fact. However I also told the OP's author to wait for a couple of months if he was unsure. So?

Demos are perphaps a must but the publishers manage, not anyone of us. There are few demos available, often from indies looking for more support. Urban Strife had one maybe two during a limited period. Others choose early access. A demo is not that easy to do, you need to have a basic tutorial ready, at least a significant part of early game ready and most assets ready. Or you can have a limited time version when the game is released, like business softwares. But again it's the editor choice.
